Welcome to the
21st Century Learner Driver Syllabus (21LDS)
"Behaviour and attitude are contributory factors
in 95% of all road crashes"
Many young people pass their driving test with so little experience of what it is really like to drive unsupervised that they are at great risk on today’s busy roads. Think back to when you learned to drive and passed your driving test and remember how long it took you to gain the experience you have now. Perhaps you had a couple of bumps and scrapes? And perhaps you took some risks that you are amazed you survived?
With the 21LDS you can rest assured that your youngsters will learn to drive in a way that will keep them safe for life at a price that you can afford.
Cost
The 21LDS cost is dependant on your instructor's local rate. Students learning to drive with a friend can have two hours for the price of one. The first two hours of post test training is free of charge. The cost of four workshops is £21 (£5.25 each).
The Syllabus
Students attend four workshops as part of the 21LDS. The workshops result in them devising and producing their own road safety campaign.
There are six learning outcomes, which are measured through the completion of six assessments.
Students take responsibility for their own learning and are encouraged to recognise how their personality, values and opinions have an impact on how they control the vehicle and integrate with other road users.
Structured training
The 21LDS delivers a structured training programme and achieves the same as an accredited qualification but without the extra cost. Every student going through the 21LDS will have their own PROP (Personal Record of Progress) through which they can monitor their achievements identifying strengths, development needs and limitations.
Paired training
Students of the 21LDS are encouraged to learn to drive with a friend creating opportunity for peer discussion, feedback and mutual support. This leads to students thinking for themselves through listening to and observing their driving partner.
Learning to drive with a friend dramatically reduces the overall cost – in fact, students get two lessons for the price of one.
Driving Instructor
All driving instructors delivering the 21LDS are registered with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) as Approved Driving Instructors (ADI) and, in addition, have had specialised training and development. 21LDS driving instructors operate independently and are not part of a large organisation.
Post test training
Driving instructors delivering the 21LDS recognise how important it is for young people to take post test training once they have passed their driving test. This is why the first two hours of post test training will be free of charge, providing the 21LDS has been fully completed – as evidenced through the PROP – up until this point.
Benefits
Providing students complete the whole of the 21LDS, including post test training – as evidenced through the PROP – they will be eligible for insurance discounts.
